Vulcans downed by Ohio Dominican, 4-1

Vanek notches second goal of the season; Cal U plays third home game in a week

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 11) – The Vulcans suffered a 4-1 loss to Ohio Dominican on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 0-3-1 on the year after closing a three-game homestand. Meanwhile, the Panthers improve to 1-1-1 this season after being idle for a week.

Ohio Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a goal by Griffin Cook, who took a shot from 30 yards out and was able to beat the goalkeeper to the right. The Panthers doubled their lead seven minutes later, as River Allbaugh converted a penalty kick after a Vulcan foul in the box. After a shot by junior midfielder Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) and a corner kick by freshman Logan Errett (McDonald, Pa./ Trinity), the Panthers struck again in the 28th minute. Adboul Mamadou took the ball from midfield and was able to maneuver around defenders to beat the goalkeeper to the right side of the net to extend the lead to 3-0 heading into halftime.

Just eight minutes into the second half, Ohio Dominican stretched its lead to 4-0 on a goal by Jack Heyes, who was able to sneak a shot in the top right corner of the net.

With less than a minute left in the contest, the Vulcans avoided the shutout when sophomore midfielder Zach Vanek (Greenburg, Pa./Hempfield) notched his second goal of the season after converting a penalty kick.

Junior goalkeeper Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) finished with three saves while playing all 90 minutes on Saturday.

The Panthers finished with a 10-5 shot advantage and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 18, when they travel to face Davis & Elkins in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
