Cal U earns two sweeps at Fairmont State

Benson collects pair of assist/dig double-doubles; Howard, Johnson both record nine blocks

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Sept. 3) – The Vulcans collected a 3-0 victory against both Alderson Broaddus and Lake Erie on Friday while opening the season at the Fairmont State Invitational.

With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball teams sits at 2-0 overall this year.

Against Alderson Broaddus of the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Vulcans earned a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-22, 25-16) after recording 11.5 blocks. Junior Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) led the team with 10 kills and senior Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) finished with eight kills, while junior Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) posted seven kills on a .353 hitting percentage. Senior Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense with 29 assists and added four service aces.

Junior Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) paced the team with 11 digs and Benson registered 10 digs in the victory. Burkey and freshman Emily Buwawa (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) collected nine and eight digs, respectively. Howard controlled the net with a career-high seven blocks and Burkey added four blocks versus the Battlers.

Against Lake Erie of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Cal U posted a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-21, 25-12) on Friday after collecting 14 service aces. Burkey finished with a team-leading nine kills and freshman Sophia Johnson (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) totaled seven kills. Benson guided the offense with 23 assists, while Moehring led the team with five service aces.

Buwawa led the team with 13 digs, while Lynch and Benson each collected 11 digs against the Storm. Johnson registered a combined seven blocks in the sweep.

The Vulcans continue play at the season-opening tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 4, when they face Davis & Elkins and the host Fighting Falcons.
