Cal U splits two matches at Fairmont State

Goff records career highs in assists, digs versus Falcons; Moehring totals a combined 26 kills

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Sept. 4) – The Vulcans collected a 3-0 victory against Davis & Elkins on Saturday before falling by a 3-1 count to the host Fighting Falcons in the final day of the Fairmont State Invitational.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team sits at 3-1 overall this year after playing three opponents from the Mountain East Conference (MEC).

Against Davis & Elkins of the MEC, Cal U earned a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-17, 25-17) after recording 36 kills. Senior Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) paced the team with 10 kills and junior Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) finished with nine kills and a team-leading 17 digs. Senior Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) led the offense with 13 assists, while classmate Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) added 10 assists and four service aces.

Senior Kiandria Cowart (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) and freshman Sophia Johnson (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) controlled the net, as they both notched seven blocks. Lynch recorded 15 digs and Moehring had eight digs in the win.

Against host Fairmont State, the Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss (19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25) after posting a .173 hitting percentage over four sets. Moehring led the team with a season-high 16 kills, while Burkey and sophomore Alexa Malloy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) added nine and eight kills, respectively.

Goff recorded career highs with 23 assists and 18 digs, while Lynch led the team with 24 digs. Benson ranked second on the team with 18 assists and Johnson set a career high with nine blocks.

Cal U returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 9, when it begins the Vulcan Invitational against Shippensburg at 7 p.m.
