Tennis posts win at Saint Vincent, 7-2

Three players earn multiple wins in match; Gia Winseck, Everett collect victories in college debut

LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 27) – The Vulcans earned a 7-2 victory at Saint Vincent in non-conference play on Monday evening.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 2-2 this year after posting its first victory since the season-opener. Meanwhile, the Bearcats of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) fall to 2-5 this year.

The Vulcans swept doubles play on Monday for the second time this fall. Sophomore Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and senior Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) collected an 8-2 victory against Maura Skelley and Angela Popovich while playing at first doubles. Freshman Gia Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who was making her college debut, and classmate Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) posted an 8-2 win at the second position over Julia Runk and Lauren Hartner. At the third slot, sophomore Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and freshman Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario)) registered an 8-5 victory against Abigail Donnelly and Lydia Lieb.

Cal U completed a sweep in the top half of the singles session on Monday with Duran claiming a 6-2, 1-6, 10-2 win at the first slot over Skelley. At the second position, Del Mar Ojeda registered a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Popovich and Gia Winseck posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles against Trinity Miller. Feltenberger was defeated by Lieb by a 0-6, 6-4, 8-10 count in the fourth spot and freshman Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) dropped a 7-6 (7-5),, 3-6, 9-11 match to Donnelly at the fifth slot. Sophomore Sierra Everett (Philadelphia, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) registered a 6-3, 6-1 at the sixth singles while making her college debut against the Bearcats.

Cal U returns to action this weekend when it competes at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual Championships in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 2-4.
