Cal U swept at Edinboro, 3-0

Vulcans begin five-match road trip; Moehring leads team in kills, ranks second in digs

EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 25) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at McComb Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 5-6 overall with a 0-2 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 8-1 this season while playing their first divisional match this fall.

Senior Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) paced the team with seven kills, while senior Kiandria Cowart (East Liverpool, Ohio/ East Liverpool) and junior Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) tallied five and four kills, respectively. Senior Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and junior Ashlynn Gulakowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) guided the offense with a combined 18 assists.

As the libero, sophomore Mia Thompson (Delaware, Ohio/Delaware Hayes) led the team with 10 digs and Moehring added eight digs. Howard also recorded five block assists in the loss.

The Vulcans jumped out to an early lead before dropping the opening set by a 25-21 count. Cal U held a 6-1 lead before Edinboro won six of nine points to cut the lead to 9-7. Cal U won back-to-back points to take a 12-10 lead before the teams traded the next 15 points with the Vulcans maintaining a 20-18 lead. The set contained six lead changes and nine ties before the Fighting Scots rattled off six-straight points to close the set with a 25-21 win.

The Fighting Scots recorded 14 kills while posting a 25-20 victory in the second set. Edinboro won four-straight points early in the set to take a 7-3 advantage. The Vulcans rattled off the next two points before Edinboro collected four-straight points to take a 11-5 lead and forced a timeout. The Vulcans mounted a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to 18-15 before the Fighting Scots responded by posting a 7-5 run to take the set by a 25-20 count.

Edinboro posted a .270 hitting percentage in the third set, as the teams combined for six ties and three lead changes with the Fighting Scots securing the match with a 25-18 win. Cal U scored back-to-back points to even the score at 4-4 before the teams traded the next eight points to be tied at 8-8. Edinboro held a 15-13 lead before winning four of six points to force the Vulcans to call a timeout. The teams traded the next six points before the Fighting Scots rallied off the final three points to post a 25-18 victory.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 28, when it travels to nearby Greensburg, Pennsylvania, to face Seton Hill at 7 p.m.
