GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Vulcans snapped a seven-match losing streak in the series with Seton Hill on Tuesday night by earning a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-11, 25-27, 25-23) at the McKenna Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 6-6 this season with a 1-2 mark in divisional action. The Vulcans also snapped a five-match losing streak at the McKenna Center with their last victory coming in the 2014 PSAC Championship. Meanwhile, the Griffins drop to 6-6 overall behind a 1-2 record in league play.
Senior
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) set a season high with 18 kills on a .235 hitting percentage. She collected eight digs, two blocks and two service aces to finish the match with 21.0 points, also a season best.
Junior
Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) also established a season high with 11 kills while hitting at a .360 clip in the victory. Fellow junior
Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) matched her season high of eight kills, while sophomore
Jaiden Armitage (Happy Valley, Ore./Clackamas) added eight kills in her collegiate debut on Tuesday.
Senior
Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and junior
Ashlynn Gulakowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) both registered career highs in assists at Seton Hill. Goff totaled 27 assists and Gulawkowski finished with 22 assists in the win. Howard added four blocks and three service aces, while junior
Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) paced the team with 16 digs.
Cal U won the opening set by a 25-22 margin after the teams combined for nine ties and seven lead changes. The Vulcans won three-straight points twice early in the set to take an 8-6 lead on a kill by Armitage before the Griffins rallied off seven of eight points to take a 13-9 lead. Cal U trimmed the deficit to 16-15 before Seton Hill won back-to-back points. The Vulcans then seized control of the set with a 9-3 run to take a 24-21 lead before the teams traded the last two points, 25-22.
The Vulcans registered a staggering .522 hitting percentage in the second set while committing just two attacking errors. Cal U jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a service ace by Gulakowski before Seton Hill won four-straight points. The Vulcans later scored eight-unanswered points to take a commanding 17-7 lead with the Griffins committing four attacking errors during the run. Cal U stretched the lead to 24-10 behind six-straight points with a combined five kills from Moehring and senior
Kiandria Cowart (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool). The teams again traded the last two points with Moehring finishing the set with a kill, 25-11.
Cal U committed 10 attacking errors in the third set, as Seton Hill posted a 27-25 victory. The Griffins won the initial five points of the set and later won four-straight points to take a 10-4 lead to force a timeout. Seton Hill eventually won three-straight points to hold a 19-11 before Cal U rallied off six-straight points to tie the score at 22-22 behind consecutive kills by Moehring. The teams traded back-to-back points to tie the score at 24-24 before the Griffins won three of the four points, 26-24.
The Vulcans hit at a .229 clip in the fourth set to earn the match victory on Tuesday. Cal U won six-straight points early in the set to take a 9-3 lead on a solo block by Howard. The Griffins countered with a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 11-10 before later winning four-straight points to take a 14-13 lead. Seton Hill held a 19-17 lead before Cal U earned four-straight points to reclaim the lead at 21-19. The teams traded the final eight points with the Vulcans winning the set by a 25-23 margin on a kill by Howard.
Cal U continues its road trip on Saturday, Oct. 2, when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
