Vulcans shutout at home by Gannon, 2-0

Ouimet tallies eight saves in contest; Cal U plays first home game in two weeks

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 22) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Gannon on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 0-5 overall with an 0-4 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights improve to 2-1-2 this season, all in league action.

After weather forced a delay to the start of the game, the Lady Knights scored just 68 seconds into the game. Gabby Boden took a cross from the right side of the box from Sarah Fails and was able to convert a sliding kick to beat the goalie in the right corner of the net. Gannon continued to be aggressive, as freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) recorded three saves on five shots in the first half. The Vulcans were limited to just one shot in the first half, as the Lady Knights took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Knights doubled their lead at the 54:20-mark when Fails took a long pass from Laurel Prokopchak beyond midfield and was able to beat the goalie in the bottom left corner of the net. Gannon continued to control the pace with three shots and a corner kick, as Ouimet was able to thwart the attack with three more saves. Junior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) had a chance to cut into the deficit when she took a pass from classmate Claire Mercurio (Coraopolis, Pa. /West Allegheny) in the 66th minute but sailed her shot above the crossbar.

Ouimet finished with eight saves on 16 shots faced while playing all 90 minutes of action on Wednesday night.

Gannon finished with a 16-2 shot advantage, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal, and held a 7-2 lead in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action when it hosts Slippery Rock in divisional action on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m.
