Cal U blanked by Slippery Rock, 3-0

Ouimet, Ramaley combine for 12 saves; Vulcans will play three of next four contests on the road

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 25) – The Vulcans were blanked by a 3-0 count against Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 0-6 overall with a 0-5 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 6-1-1 on the season with a 5-1-0 mark in divisional action after winning the 2019 PSAC Championship.

Slippery Rock seized an early 1-0 lead at the 8:16-mark when Jordyn Minda took a cross from the left side of the box from Julia Mascaro and was able to beat the goalkeeper in the left side of the net. The Rock doubled their lead in the 18th minute as Georgia Nagucki took a shot from 20 yards out and was able to beat the goalie in the upper left corner of the net with Emily Arnold being awarded the assist on the goal. Slippery Rock kept the pace of the first half as it recorded 14 shots in the period with freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) tallying two saves prior to the break.

After halftime, Slippery Rock kept on the offensive attack with Nagucki capitalizing on a free kick after a Vulcan foul to stretch the lead to 3-0 in the 64th minute. Nagucki was able to get it around the Cal U defensive wall, as it slipped through the goalkeepers hands for her second goal of the day. The Vulcans looked to cut into the deficit in the 71st minute when junior Claire Mercurio (Corapolis, Pa./West Allegheny) took a cross from classmate Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) before the attempt was saved by the goalie.

Ouimet finished with seven saves while playing 60-plus minutes of action and sophomore Katie Ramaley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) recorded five saves in her college debut on Saturday.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 29, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown at 4 p.m.
