Vulcans score most goals since 2015 season; Cruz records second career multi-goal game

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 29) – In the highest scoring game in recent program history, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 9-4 loss at Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 0-6 this season with a 0-5 mark in divisional play. Cal U tallied four goals in a game for the first time since the 2015 campaign, while the 13 combined goals are the most in recent years (since 2003). Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats improve to 3-6 overall with a 2-5 mark in conference play.

Junior Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) recorded her second career multi-goal game, scoring a pair of goals on four shots. Classmate Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) tallied three points in the contest with one goal and one assist, while freshman Ashley Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) collected her first career goal on Wednesday.

UPJ came out firing early as it scored less than 90 seconds into the game and quickly built the lead to 3-0 by the 8:42-mark. Cruz was able to cut into the deficit in the 12th minute with her second goal of the season. The Mountain Cats responded with a goal at the 20:25-mark before Venezia scored off a pass from Galbreath less than two minutes later, 4-2. In the final minutes of the first half, UPJ added another goal to stretch the lead to 5-2.

Just 60 seconds into the second half, Cruz netted her second goal of the game before the Mountain Cats tallied a pair of goals in over three minutes to expand the lead to 7-3. Galbreath collected her first goal of the season in the 69th minute before UPJ scored the final two goals of the game, 9-4.

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) finished with 10 saves while playing the entire first half and sophomore goalkeeper Katie Ramaley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) made one save in the final 45 minutes.

The Vulcans were involved in a game featuring double-digit goals for the first time since the final contest of the 2007 regular season.
