Cal U falls at home to Fairmont State, 6-1

Vulcans debut pair of new doubles teams; Tennis earns win at sixth singles

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 21) – The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Fairmont State to close out a three-match homestand on Tuesday afternoon at Roadman Park.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 1-2 this season with all three matches being in non-conference play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Falcons of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) improve to 1-1 overall.

Fairmont State secured the doubles point after winning all three matches in the session. At the first slot, senior Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and sophomore Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) dropped a 6-2 decision to Ainara Pastor Garcia and Isadora Matos. Freshmen Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Columbia/Colegio Americano de Cali) and Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario) fell by a 6-1 margin at the second position to Candella Sevilla and Mackenzie Sorton. At third doubles, sophomore Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and freshman Olivia Anastos (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) suffered a 6-2 loss to Emily Harper and Emme McKnight.

The Fighting Falcons claimed wins in five singles matches to earn the match victory on Tuesday. Duran suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Garcia at the first slot and Del Mar Ojeda was dealt a 6-4, 6-2 defeat by Matos at second singles. Iacob was blanked by a 6-0, 6-0 margin against Sevilla at the third position, while Feltenberger dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Sorton in the fourth slot. Anastos fell by a 6-2, 7-5 margin in the fifth position on Tuesday. The Vulcans earned the win at the sixth position via forfeit.

Cal U returns to action on Monday, Sept. 27, when it travels to Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to face Saint Vincent at 4 p.m.
