Vulcans blank La Roche in season-opener, 7-0

Cal U features five newcomers in lineup, wins fall season-opener for first time since 2018

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 12) – Featuring five newcomers in the lineup, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team opened the fall campaign with a 7-0 victory over La Roche on Sunday morning at Roadman Park.

With the victory, the Vulcans captured their first season-opening win in the fall since the 2018-19 campaign. Meanwhile, the Redhawks – a NCAA Division III program – drop to 0-2 this year before beginning play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) later this week.

Cal U secured the doubles point after winning all three matches in the session on Sunday. Sophomores Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spin/Esteve Albert) and Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) posted an 8-2 victory against Alexandra Jaksec and Emily Lyon while playing at first doubles for the first time in their career. The Vulcan duo played together three times in the spring season at the second slot.

Seniors Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) collected an 8-0 win at the second position over D'Shae Xavier and Rubina Ibeawuchi. Freshman Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) and sophomore Sierra Everett (Philadelphia, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) – both of who were making their debuts with the program – registered an 8-0 victory against Joana Valentin and Camila Casas at third doubles.

The Vulcans completed the match victory by winning all six singles matches in straight sets at Roadman Park. Freshman Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win in her collegiate debut at the first slot over Jaksec. Fellow freshman Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario)) also finished with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Lyon at the second position while making her debut. Freshman Olivia Anastos (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) blanked Xavier by a 6-0, 6-0 count at third singles.

Feltenberger earned her first career win at the fourth position by dealing Ibeawuchi a 6-0, 6-0 defeat. Hoin collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Casas at the fifth slot and senior Megan Beam (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), who is also a member of the Cal U swimming team, registered her first career win at sixth singles by a 6-1, 6-0 count against Valentin.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18, when it hosts Westminster (Pa.) at Roadman Park with play beginning at 4 p.m.
