Vulcans downed by Westminster, 5-2

Cal U plays four true freshmen in match versus Titans; Vulcans in middle of three-match homestand

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 18) – Playing four freshmen in the lineup, the Vulcans dropped a 5-2 match against Westminster (Pa.) at Roadman Park on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 1-1 this season with both matches being against NCAA Division III programs. Meanwhile, the Titans of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) improve to 4-0 overall this year.

Westminster captured the doubles points on Saturday after winning all three matches in the session. At the first slot, freshmen Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano De Cali) and Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario) suffered a 6-4 loss to Gia Francisco and Emma Sukal. Sophomores Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) fell by a 6-2 margin at the second position to Sara Small and Sabrina Slagle. In third doubles, freshmen Olivia Anastos (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) and Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) dropped a 6-2 decision to Caroline Fox and Ryleigh Valone.

The Vulcans were able to win singles matches at the top two positions, as Duran defeated Sukal by a 6-3, 6-4 count in the first slot and Del Mar Ojeda earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Slagle at second singles. The Titans captured wins at remaining four single matches with Iacob suffering a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Francisco at the third position. Feltenberger dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Small in the fourth slot, while Anastos was dealt a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Fox. Hoin rounded out the singles matches with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Valone at sixth singles.

Cal U is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 21, as it hosts Fairmont State at Roadman Park with play beginning at 3:30 p.m.
