Women's Soccer edged on PK at Clarion, 1-0

Vulcans finished with 14-9 shot advantage; Golden Eagles score GW early in second half

CLARION, Pa. (Sept. 11) – In their first road game of the year, the Vulcans dropped a 1-0 contest with the lone goal being scored on a penalty kick on Saturday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 0-3 overall with a 0-2 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles improve to 1-1 this season with both matches being in league action.

In the first half, both teams were aggressive on offense with five combined shots in the initial seven minutes of the contest with freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) facing three early shots. The two teams combined for 10 shots and three corner kicks in a scoreless first half.

Just four minutes into the second half, Clarion was able to take a 1-0 lead when Kylee Cross converted a penalty kick after a Cal U foul in the box. The Vulcans continued to have chances on offense, as they held a 10-3 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes.

Junior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) and freshman Ashley Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each had four total shots and placed one on goal, while freshman Joelle Jenkins (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and  junior Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) both registered a shot on goal.

Ouimet finished with three saves on nine shots while playing all 90 minutes of action on Saturday night.

Cal U finished with a 14-9 shot advantage and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when they travel to face Edinboro in divisional play at 6 p.m.
