CALIFORNIA (Sept. 10) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team posted a split of matches while hosting the Vulcan Invitational on Friday, earning a 3-1 victory (29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16) over Frostburg State before dropping a 3-0 contest (25-18, 25-28, 25-15) against Bloomsburg.
With the split, the Vulcans move to 4-3 this season with a 1-2 mark at their home invitational.
Against Frostburg State, the Vulcans earned a 3-1 victory after recording 59 kills while matching a season-best .261 hitting percentage. Senior
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) set a season high with 16 kills and freshman
Allie Droneberger (North Beach, Md./Northern) finished with 14 kills in her college debut. Senior
Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) guided the offense with a career-high 24 assists, while classmate
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) tallied 19 assists and 12 digs.
Junior
Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) paced the team with 21 digs and Droneberger added 13 digs for a kill/dig double-double. Freshman
Sophia Johnson (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) and senior
Kiandria Cowart (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) controlled the net with four and three blocks, respectively.
Against Bloomsburg, Cal U dropped a 3-0 contest with the match consisting of only two lead changes and three ties. Sophomore
Alexa Malloy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) led the team with six kills and junior
Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, GA./North Atlanta) carded five kills and two blocks against the Huskies.
Junior
Ashlynn Gulakowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) posted nine assists and seven digs in her season debut, while Lynch recorded a team-leading 11 digs and five assists.
Cal U closes its home event tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 11, with a match against West Liberty at the Convocation Center at 2 p.m.
