INDIANA, Pa. (April 7) – Facing its second regionally-ranked opponent of the spring, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team dropped a 6-1 match at IUP on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 1-5 this season behind a 1-3 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks improve to 7-2 overall with a 5-0 record in divisional action and clinch at least a share of the PSAC West title on Wednesday.
IUP won a pair of doubles matches to secure the doubles point in the match. At the first position, senior
Laura Vargas (Bogota, Colombia/Siglo XXI) and freshman
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) suffered a 6-1 loss against Idoia Herta and Lydia Vlachou. Junior
Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) teamed together for the first time this season and dropped a 6-0 contest to Karolin Kirchtag and Katy Graydon. The Vulcans posted the victory at third doubles via forfeit.
The Crimson Hawks claimed wins in five singles matches to earn the match victory on Wednesday. Vargas was dealt a 6-0, 6-1 defeat by Kirchtag at the first slot and Winseck suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss at second singles to Huerta. Duran was blanked by a 6-0, 6-0 margin by Graydon at the third position and Feltenberger fell by a 6-0, 6-0 score against Vlachou at the fourth slot. Junior
Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match at fifth singles to Abby Jones. The Vulcans earned the win at the sixth position via forfet.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, April 10, when it travels to face Seton Hill with the match scheduled at Greater Latrobe High School, starting at 1 p.m.
