CALIFORNIA (April 3) – The Vulcans recognized their two seniors and captured a 7-0 victory over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon at Roadman Park.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 1-4 this season with a 1-2 mark in league play. The victory marked the first for second-year head coach
Anita Onufer and snapped the program's 12-match losing streak, which dated back to April 6, 2019. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-3 overall with all three matches against divisional opponents.
The Vulcans swept doubles play on Saturday to earn the doubles point for the first time this season. At the first position, senior
Laura Vargas (Bogota, Colombia/Siglo XXI) and freshman
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) earned their first win of the season with a 6-2 victory against Alexis Strouse and Kali Aughenbaugh. Senior
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and junior
Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) claimed a 6-2 win at the second slot over Hannah Schettler and Sarah Kirmeyer. Cal U also posted the victory at third doubles via forfeit.
Cal U completed the match victory after winning all six singles matches at Roadman Park. Vargas outlasted Strouse at the first position by a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-3 margin and Winseck recorded a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles against Aughenbaugh. Gallagher posted her eighth career singles victory on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Schettler at the third slot. Duran claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the forth position against Kirmeyer, while freshman
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) collected a 6-4, 6-4 win over Savannah Buttery at the fifth slot. The Vulcans captured the victory at sixth singles via forfet.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, April 7, when they travel to face IUP in PSAC West play at 3:30 p.m.
