Cal U posts win at Frostburg State, 6-1

Vulcans earn second victory of the season; Cal U claims wins in five singles matches

FROSTBURG, Md. (April 16) – In its final non-conference match of the season, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team earned a 6-1 victory at Frostburg State on Friday evening.

With the win, the Vulcans move to 2-6 this season with both wins coming in the last two weeks. Meanwhile, the Bobcats fall to 1-5 overall while in its second year as a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) after previously being a NCAA Division III program.

Cal U captured the doubles point for the second time this spring after winning two of the three matches. At the first position, senior Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and junior Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) collected a 6-4 victory over Immanuella Odiong and Shea Przywieczerski. Freshmen Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) dropped a 6-3 match at second doubles against Rabiatu Ladan and Elizabeth Hixson. At the third slot, senior Laura Vargas (Bogota, Colombia/Siglo XXI) and junior Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned their first win as a doubles team with a 6-2 victory over Madison Toothman and Cherise Jenkins.

The Vulcans completed the match victory with five wins in singles play while in Maryland. Vargas claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at the first position against Odiong and Winseck recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ladan at the second slot. Gallagher earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles against Tootahman and Duran posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hixson at the fourth position. Feltenberger registered a 6-4, 7-5 win at the fifth slot against Przywieczerski, while McDaniel suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Jen Dieterle at sixth singles.

Cal U closes out the season on Tuesday, April 20, when it hosts Slippery Rock at Roadman Park with play starting at 3:30 p.m.
