Griffins score game-winning goal on PK; Vulcans eliminated from PSAC Tournament contention

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 3) – With post-season implications at stake, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime loss via penalty kick at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 4-9-2 overall behind a 3-5-1 mark in league play. Cal U also was eliminated from PSAC Tournament contention with one game left in the regular season. Meanwhile, Seton Hill improves to 9-7-1 this season and clinches a post-season berth with 18 points after holding a 6-3 conference record.

Cal U controlled the pace of play in the opening minutes with three corner kicks in just over a 90-second span and a pair of shots on goal in the initial seven minutes. The Griffins countered with a pair of corner kicks and shots midway through the first period with senior Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) making his second save of the game. The Vulcans later attempted a pair of shots in less than 90 seconds before placing a pair of shots on net in the final five minutes.

Early in the second half, Seton Hill tallied a pair of shots and a corner kick in the 51st minute. The teams traded possession until the Griffins placed an attempt on net at the 67:28-mark. Seton Hill kept applying pressure in the final 10-plus minutes of regulation with a pair of shots and an offside.

The Griffins captured the victory by scoring the game-winning goal at the 90:57-mark when Archie Lock scored on a penalty kick, his fourth goal of the year.

Zabilowicz finished with four saves while playing nearly 91 full minutes.

Seton Hill finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots after preventing Cal U from attempting a shot following halftime. The Griffins also posted a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans close out the season on Saturday, Nov. 6, when they travel to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 7:30 p.m.
