Cal U suffers loss at Mercyhurst, 3-0

Lakers score twice on penalty kicks; Mercyhurst claims top seed from PSAC West in tournament

ERIE, Pa (Nov. 6) – The Vulcans allowed a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes on Saturday night before concluding the season with a 3-0 loss at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team finished the season with a 4-10-2 overall record and a 3-6-1 mark in conference play. The Vulcans close the season in fourth place in the Western Division with 10 points. Meanwhile, the Lakers improve to 12-3-2 overall with an 8-2-2 record in league action. Mercyhurst tied for first place in the PSAC West standings with 23 points and claimed the top seed for the upcoming league tournament.

After a foul was whistled against the Vulcans early in the first half, Sidney Warden executed a penalty kick and gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at the 6:33-mark. Just 42 seconds later, Mercyhurst increased its lead when Dylan Summer took a pass from Nic Munch and beat the goalkeeper to give the Lakers an early 2-0 advantage. The Vulcans responded with two shots in the 41st minute, but were unable to capitalize.

Following halftime, Mercyhurst registered three shots and two corner kicks in the initial 15 minutes of the second half. After the teams combined for two shots and two corner kicks, Cal U recorded two shots in the 85th minute, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Mercyhurst extended its lead in the 86th minute when Sean Kerrigan capitalized on another penalty kick to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) finished with three saves while playing the entire game on Saturday. Zabilowicz finished the season ranked among the top 10 in the conference with 3.67 saves per game.

Mercyhurst held a 14-6 shot advantage, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal, plus a 9-0 lead in corner kicks.
