Vulcans match highest ranking at No. 3

WACO, Texas (Nov. 1) – Following another victory and a top-three showdown in Georgia, the California University of Pennsylvania football team again climbed one position to No. 3 in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll on Monday afternoon to match its highest-ever ranking in the poll.

The Vulcans climbed to No. 3 in the poll with 668 points to equal its best-ever ranking set on Oct. 18, 2010. Cal U raced out to 28 points in the first quarter on Saturday before finishing with a 42-14 win on Senior Day against Seton Hill. The Vulcans remain one of four undefeated teams (Ferris State, Valdosta State, Bentley) in the country this year with each team sitting at 8-0 overall.

Cal U is now one of eight schools from NCAA Super Region One featured in the latest AFCA poll. Notre Dame (Ohio) of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) also jumped one spot to No. 8 following a home shutout victory, while Bentley of the Northeast-10 (NE-10) Conference climbed two positions to No. 9. Shepherd rallied off over 60 points in its win to jump two slots to No. 11, while Slippery Rock remained at No. 15 after throwing for eight touchdowns in a road victory. Kutztown extended its winnings streak to seven games and climbed two positions to No. 19, while Frostburg State of the MEC vaulted three positions to No. 20. New Haven (Conn.) of the NE-10 made its first appearance in the poll since 2018 by debuting at No. 24.

Ferris State (Mich.) remained at No. 1 in the poll for the third-straight week with 24 first-place votes. Valdosta State (Ga.) collected the final six first-place votes and stayed at No. 2 following a 36-34 home win over then-No. 3 West Georgia, who fell to No. 12. In addition to Cal U, West Florida and Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) both also moved up one position to round out the top five this week.

In 2010, the Vulcans reached as high as No. 3 in mid-October after sitting at No. 4 for four-consecutive weeks. Cal U finished the year No. 14 in the poll after making a fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.

Cal U returns to action with its second road game against a top-25 opponent in three weeks, as it travels to face No. 15 Slippery Rock on Saturday, Nov. 6, with kickoff at 1 p.m. It also marks the sixth time since the 2013 campaign in which the Vulcans will face a nationally-ranked Rock program.
