Vulcans post sweep over Seton Hill, 3-0

Cal U hits at a .359 clip, totals 12 service aces in victory; Burkey, Armitage combine for 25 kills

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 29) – Behind their best hitting performance of the season, the Vulcans captured a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-18, 25-13) against Seton Hill on Friday night at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 10-10 overall behind a 5-6 mark in conference action. The Vulcans also recorded their first season sweep against the Griffins since the 2013 campaign. Meanwhile, Seton Hill falls to 10-13 this season with a 4-9 mark in league play.

Junior Kaylin Burkey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) paced the team with 13 kills behind an impressive .478 hitting percentage, while sophomore Jaiden Armitage (Happy Valley, Ore./Clackmas) recorded 12 kills on a .400 clip. Senior Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) added six kills on Friday. Senior Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) led the team with 22 assists, while classmate Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) collected 15 assists in the victory.

Moehring led the team with 10 digs while also tying her season high with five service aces. Junior Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights/Holy Name) registered eight digs and Benson tallied four service aces. Junior Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) controlled the net with five blocks in the sweep.

The Vulcans claimed the opening set by a 25-20 count after totaling 14 kills on a .306 hitting percentage. Cal U opened play on a 7-3 run behind kills from Armitage and Burkey. The teams traded the next four points before the Vulcans won four of the next seven points to hold a 13-8 lead. Seton Hill collected the next three points before Cal U went on a 5-2 run to take an 18-13 advantage. The Vulcans won four of the next seven points to claim a 22-16 lead and forced a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Griffins rallied for three of the next four points before Cal U claimed first set, 25-20.

Cal U earned a 25-18 win in the second set behind 12 kills and never trailed in the set. The Vulcans opened the set on a 7-1 run behind kills from Armitage, sophomore Alayja Floyd (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickering Central) and two service aces from Moehring. The teams traded the next eight points before Seton Hill won four of the next six points to cut the lead to 13-9. The Vulcans later collected five-consecutive points to hold a 21-13 lead. Seton Hill won five of the next seven points before Cal U won the final two points to take the set, 25-18.

The Vulcans recorded an impressive .609 clip in the third set to roll to a 25-13 victory. The Vulcans held an early 9-5 lead before winning five of the next seven points on kills by Armitage and Floyd to claim a 14-7 lead. Cal U mounted a 5-2 run behind two service aces from Benson and two kills by Arimtage to take a 19-9 advantage. Seton Hill won three of the next five points before the Vulcans claimed the match win on a 4-1 run, capped by a kill from Floyd to win the set by a count of 25-13.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 30, when it hosts Slippery Rock at the Convocation Center in divisional play at 12 p.m.
