CALIFORNIA (Oct. 30) – Sophomore
Alayja Floyd (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) tallied a season-high six blocks, as the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-22, 25-13) over Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 11-10 overall with a 6-6 mark in conference action. Cal U sits in a tie for fourth place in the divisional standings with two weeks left of the regular season. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock falls to 5-21 this season behind a 1-11 mark in league play.
Senior
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and sophomore
Jaiden Armitage (Happy Valley, Ore./Clackamas) both led the team with eight kills, while junior
Chelsea Howard (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) tallied seven kills on Saturday. Seniors
Marley Goff (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) controlled the offense with 18 and 11 assists, respectively, in the win.
Junior
Kelly Lynch (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) paced the team with 12 digs and added two service aces, while Moehring and Goff finished with 10 and eight digs in the sweep. Armitage and Howard both collected three blocks on Saturday.
Cal U claimed the opening set by a 25-13 count after totaling 11 kills on a .300 hitting percentage. The Vulcans won 10-straght points early in the set to hold a 13-2 advantage. The teams traded the next four points before The Rock won three-consecutive points to cut the deficit to 16-7. The Vulcans then mounted a 7-1 run to take a commaniding 22-8 lead before Slippery Rock won six of the next eight points to trail 24-13. Cal U won the set on a kill by Burkey, 25-13.
After six ties and three lead changes, the Vulcans earned a 25-22 win in the second set. Slippery Rock jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before Cal U rattled off five-consecutive points to take a 7-6 lead. The teams traded the next eight points before the Vulcans mounted a 9-3 run on kills by Burkey and Howard to hold a 20-13 lead and forced a timeout. Out of the timeout, The Rock rallied off an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 22-21 and forced a timeout. Cal U won three of the next four points capped by a kill from Moehring, 25-22.
The Vulcans registered 13 kills on an impressive .303 clip in the third set to roll to a 25-13 victory. The Rock jumped out to a 3-1 lead before the Vulcans mounted six-consecutive points to hold a 7-3 advantage and forced a timeout. Slippery Rock responded with a 4-1 run before the Vulcans collected five-consecutive points on kills by Armitage and senior
Kiandria Cowart (East Liverpool, Ohio/East Liverpool) to take a 13-7 lead. The two teams traded the next four points before Cal U won six of eight points to hold a 21-11 advantage and forced a Slippery Rock timeout. The Vulcans claimed the match victory behind a 4-2 run, capped with a kill by Floyd, by a 25-13 count.
Cal U returns to action on Friday, Nov. 5, when it hosts IUP at the Convocation Center in divisional play at 6 p.m.
