ERIE, Pa. (Oct 23) – In its first action in a week, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team was blanked by a 3-0 count against Gannon on Saturday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the McConnell Family Stadium.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-10-0 this season with a 3-9-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights improve 9-2-2 overall, all in conference play.
In the first half, Gannon came out aggressive by tallying seven shots in the initial 14 minutes of the contest, three of which were saved by freshman goalkeeper
Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick). After a corner kick, the Lady Knights struck first at the 33:02-mark when Jamie Seneca took a pass from Megan McCartney and was able to beat the goalie to give Gannon a 1-0 lead. The Vulcans were held without a shot attempt in the first half, as they entered halftime trailing by a 1-0 margin.
After intermission, the Lady Knights doubled their lead just six minutes into the second half when Sarah Fails took a cross from Taylor Lewis and beat the goalkeeper to give Gannon a 2-0 lead. Just five minutes later, Gannon extended its lead at the 54:59-mark as Kayla Bevacqua netted a goal to give the Lady Knights a 3-0 lead. Junior
Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) had an opportunity to cut into the deficit when she placed a shot to the bottom right corner of the net but it was saved by the goalkeeper.
Ouimet finished with 11 saves while playing all 90 minutes of action on Saturday evening. She has now collected double-digit saves four times after starting all 13 games this year.
Gannon finished a 29-7 shot advantage, including a 15-4 edge in shots on goal, and held a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 27, when it travels to Slippery Rock in divisional action at 1 p.m.
