Vulcans downed at Slippery Rock, 5-1

McComb posts first goal of the season; Ouimet eclipses century mark in saves this year

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Oct. 27) – Facing one of the top teams in the region, the Vulcans suffered a 5-1 loss at Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 3-11 overall behind a 3-10 mark in divisional action. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 11-3-2 this season and holds a 10-3-1 record in conference play. Slippery Rock, which won the 2019 PSAC Championship, was slotted eighth in the initial NCAA Atlantic regional rankings released on Wednesday.

The Rock threatened to take a lead in the eighth minute before freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) stopped a penalty kick. Slippery Rock eventually took a 1-0 lead when Jordyn Minda scored on a rebound in the 17th minute. Ouimet collected a pair of saves in just over 30 seconds before Minda stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 27:41-mark. Slippery Rock added to the lead in the 32nd minute off an assist from Minda before taking a 4-0 lead at the 39:54-mark.

In the opening minutes of the second half, The Rock stretched the lead to 5-0 on a goal by Rachel Edge, her league-leading 11th goal of the year. Cal U avoided the shutout in the 62nd minute when junior Abbey McComb (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) tallied her first goal of the season off a pass from classmate Elisabeth Engle (Beaver, Pa./Beaver).

Ouimet finished with six saves while playing the first half on Wednesday. She now leads the PSAC with 102 saves this year, becoming only the third Cal U goalie to eclipse the century mark in a single season since the 2008 campaign. Sophomore Katie Ramaley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) made seven saves in the second half against Slippery Rock, her third appearance of the season.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 30, when they host Pitt-Johnstown at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility with play starting at 3:30 p.m.
