Cal U battles to tie with Pitt-Johnstown, 0-0

Ramaley collects eight saves in first career start; Vulcans play third overtime game of the season

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 30) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the tie, the Vulcans moves to 3-11-1 this season with a 2-5-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats stand at 5-10-2 overall behind a 4-9-2 record in conference play.

In the initial 17 minutes of the contest, the teams combined for five shots and three corner kicks with neither team being able to convert on opportunities. UPJ registered eight shots in the first half, while the Vulcans tallied five attempts.

In the second half, Cal U came out aggressive by recording two shots and a corner kick in the opening six minutes. The Mountain Cats answered back with a shot and a corner kick of their own with 34-plus minutes left in the half. UPJ continued to pressure the net as it tallied five more shots, two in which were saved by sophomore goalie Katie Ramaley (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), who was making her first career start. The Vulcans had opportunities to break the scoreless tie with freshman Megan Elzinga (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) having chances in the 80th and 82nd minutes, as her shot sailed high and was saved. The teams combined for three more shots and two corner kicks before the game was forced to overtime.

In overtime, UPJ mounted a corner kick and a shot on goal which was saved by Ramaley before the contest was forced to double-overtime. Senior Hannah Burgess (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) had a shot blocked in the 107th minute before freshman Adriana Marina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) had her shot saved as the game ended in a scoreless tie.

Ramaley collected a season-high eight saves in her first career start while playing all 110 minutes on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats finished with an 18-12 shot advantage, including an 8-6 lead in shots on goal, and held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 3, when they host Seton Hill at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility in PSAC West action at 6 p.m.
