Vulcans capture OT win against Edinboro, 1-0

Venezia tallies third goal of the year, first career game-winner; Ouimet registers second-straight shutout

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 16) – Less than 90 seconds into overtime, freshman Ashley Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) scored the game-winning goal to give the Vulcans a 1-0 overtime win against Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 3-9-0 this season with a 3-8-0 mark in divisional action. The Vulcans have won back-to-back games for the first time since the 2017 campaign. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 7-5-0 overall with a 6-5-0 mark in conference play.

In the first half, both teams were aggressive offensively as they tallied five shots in the opening 17 minutes of action. The two teams continued to apply pressure by combining for nine shots and three corner kicks in the first half on Saturday.

In the second half, freshman Megan Elzinga (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) had an opportunity to give the Vulcans the lead before her shot deflected off the crossbar in the 53rd minute. Edinboro applied pressure when it tallied back-to-back shots in the 69th minute, both of which were saved by freshman goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick). The two teams combined for six shots and three corner kicks in the final 20 minutes of regulation before the game was forced into overtime.

At the 91:25-mark, Venezia took a cross from junior Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) and was able to put a shot on net as it slipped through the goalkeeper's hands to give the Vulcans a 1-0 victory.

Ouimet recorded her second-straight shutout and finished with six saves on nine shots faced while playing the entire game on Saturday afternoon.

Cal U finished with a 11-9 shot advantage, while Edinboro held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.

The Vulcans are idle for a week before traveling to Erie, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Oct. 23, to face Gannon in conference play at 5 p.m.
