Kaley Pell (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and junior
Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) both scored goals on Wednesday night, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory against Clarion at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 2-9 overall behind a 2-8 mark in league play. Cal U also claimed its first home victory this fall. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 3-6-1 this season – all in divisional action.
Clarion pressured the net with three shots on net in a span of two-plus minutes before Pell recorded her first career goal (unassisted) in the 25th minute after the ball was bouncing around the box. The Golden Eagles threatened to tie the score nearly 10 minutes later with four shots and a pair of corner kicks over nearly four minutes.
In the second half, Clarion looked to even the score with three shots and back-to-back corner kicks over a five-minute span. Cruz was unable to place a header on net following a corner kick before stretching the lead to 2-0 two minutes later when she tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season (unassisted) at the 82:36-mark.
Freshman
Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) registered her first career shutout after making seven saves on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles finished with a 13-5 shot advantage with the Vulcans placing four of their five attempts on target. Clarion also posted an 8-5 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when it hosts Edinboro at 1 p.m.
