Martin earns weekly defensive league laurel

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 11) – Following an interception return for a touchdown over the weekend, California University of Pennsylvania junior defensive back Jermal Martin, Jr. (South Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday morning.

Martin posted three tackles (two solo), 0.5 TFL, two quarterback hurries and a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown on Saturday, as the Vulcans earned a 38-17 win at Gannon in divisional play to remain undefeated this season. He recorded his first career interception return for a touchdown midway through the first quarter with the Golden Knights holding a 3-0 lead after scoring on the initial drive of the game. The interception sparked a run of 24-unanswered points by the Vulcans and a 31-10 lead at halftime.

A team captain, Martin ranks fourth on the team with 21 tackles (12 solo) this season and sits second with 5.0 TFL while playing cornerback. He also has registered 2.0 sacks and three pass-breakups in his third season as a starter. Martin has totaled 14 points this fall after previously scoring on a 62-yard punt return and a defensive PAT.

Martin earned weekly honors from the conference for the first time in his career on Monday. Overall, Cal U has received weekly accolades six times from the league this season.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when it hosts Clarion at Adamson Stadium with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
