SPOTLIGHT

#5 Glenville State v. #3 Cal U (NCAA Tournament) – March 15, 2004 – Hamer Hall
The Vulcans and Pioneers were meeting in the finals of the NCAA East Region Tournament for the third-straight year with the home team winning each of the previous two meetings. Cal U and Glenville State were both featured in the top five of the WBCA Top 25 poll. The Vulcans recently captured their third-straight PSAC Championship, while the Pioneers suffered a one-point loss in the WVIAC Championship after winning the league title in both 2002 and 2003.

Cal U repeated as regional champions with a 74-63 victory after out-scoring Glenville State by 16 points in the second half. Sameera Philyaw paced the team with both 25 points and 13 rebounds, while also being chosen the East Region Tournament MVP. The Pioneers trailed by only five points with 1:47 left to play before the Vulcans scored the final six points of the game at the free-throw line. Cal U advanced to the Elite Eight in St. Joseph, Missouri, and eventually captured the program's first NCAA National Championship with a 75-72 win against Drury (Mo.).
