Cal U blanked at Slippery Rock, 4-0

Gobbie collects five saves in second half; Rock credited with over 30 shot attempts

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Sept. 28) – Facing the preseason favorite within the division, the Vulcans suffered a 4-0 loss at Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team drops to 2-4 this season with a 1-4 mark in conference play. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock extends its winning streak to seven games and improves to 7-1 overall behind a 6-0 record in league action.

The Rock applied pressure early in the contest, tallying three shots in the opening four-plus minutes before claiming a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Rachel Edge scored her fifth goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, Slippery Rock added to its lead with a goal by Shannon McIntyre at the 17:58-mark. The Rock later stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 32nd minute on a goal by Tyler Spence.

In the final moments of the contest, Slippery Rock scored its last goal when Kayla Swope tallied her third goal of the year with just over 90 seconds remaining.

Slippery Rock attempted 15 shots or more in both halves and finished the game with a sizeable 31-8 margin. The Rock also posted a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) and sophomore Carly Gobbie (Glassport, Pa./South Allegheny) both played 45 minutes in net on Saturday. Sinatra made a pair of saves while playing the first half and Gobbie recorded five saves on 16 shots at Slippery Rock.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility with play starting at 5 p.m.
