CALIFORNIA (Oct. 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team was unable to overcome a pair of goals within the opening five minutes on Wednesday evening and dropped a 3-1 contest to Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 2-5 overall behind a 1-5 record in divisional action. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats improve to 3-5 this season with a 3-4 mark in conference play.
UPJ raced out to a 1-0 lead in less than 90 seconds when Abby LaDuke placed a shot into the top left corner of the net with an assist by Kyra Watkins. The Mountain Cats added to the lead at the 4:42-mark when LaDuke scored on a header following a corner kick by Watkins. Cal U then seized control of possession in the first half, tallying five shots and four corner kicks in a span of 15 minutes. Late in the half, junior
Kellie Lynch (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) and sophomore
Maya Willing (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) both placed shots on target within a three-minute span that were saved by the UPJ goalkeeper.
In the opening portion of the second half, the Vulcans cut the deficit to 2-1 when freshman
Abbey McComb (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) scored an unassisted breakaway goal at the 51:13-mark. McComb forced a turnover deep in UPJ territory and beat the goalie at the top of the 18-yard box before converting the open-net opportunity. The Mountain Cats responded in the 61st minute when Emily Esser scored off a corner by Watkins, her third assist of the game. Cal U later attempted to answer back with three shots and a pair of corner kicks in the closing minutes.
Cal U finished with a 13-4 shot advantage and placed seven shots on goal with freshman
