Women's Soccer posts win over Seton Hill, 2-1

Galbreath records first multi-assist game since 2015 season; Vulcans set season high with 19 shots

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 5) – Led by constant offensive pressure and a collective defensive effort, the Vulcans earned a 2-1 victory over Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 3-5 this season with a 2-5 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 4-5 overall behind a 4-3 record in divisional action. Seton Hill has made back-to-back appearances in the PSAC Tournament and tied the program record with 12 wins last year.

Seton Hill was whistled for an offside and had a shot sail wide left in the third minute before Cal U later placed a shot on net and was whistled for an offside within a span of 40 seconds. The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead when freshman Elisabeth Engle (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) placed a shot in the top right corner of the net for her second goal of the year at the 21:51-mark off a feed from classmate Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch). Seton Hill threatened to answer in the 31st minute before sophomore Carly Gobbie (Glassport, Pa./South Allegheny) made a diving save on a shot attempt off a corner kick. The Vulcans then pushed the ball up the field and nearly added to the lead 45 seconds later when freshman Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) hit the left post. Cal U continued to pressure the net with five shots, including four on net, within a span of four minutes later in the first half.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Vulcans extended the lead to 2-0 when junior Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) placed a shot just under the crossbar for her fifth career goal at the 47:47-mark. Galbreath also tallied an assist on the goal to become the first player with multiple assists in a game since the 2015 season. Galbreath narrowly missed the top left corner on a shot in the 52nd minute and later just missed an attempt left of the net at the 61:05-mark.

Seton Hill was issued multiple cards in the 75th minute and Gobbie then knocked down a shot attempt in the 84th minute. However, the Griffins maintained possession and cut the deficit to 2-1 just over 20 seconds later on a goal by Italia Biondi, her fifth of the season. Cal U was able prevent Seton Hill from attempting a shot in the final minutes to seal the victory.

The Vulcans attempted a season-high 19 shots, including 10 on target, and finished with a 19-9 shot advantage. Seton Hill posted a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

Gobbie tallied six saves while playing all 90 minutes and earned her second victory of the season.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 3:30 p.m.
