CALIFORNIA (Sept. 14) – Freshman
Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored the golden goal in the 106th minute, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team posted a 1-0 double-overtime victory versus Clarion in PSAC West action on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the win, the Vulcans improved to 2-1 overall with a 1-1 mark in conference play. Cal U also claimed its first conference win under head coach
Pete Curtis. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drop to 1-2 this season behind a 0-2 record in league action.
In the second overtime, Clarion nearly found the back of the net after a header from a corner kick sailed right over the crossbar at the 101:14-mark. The Vulcans responded midway through the overtime period with a game-winning goal by Galbreath that went across the goal into the bottom right-corner of the net, 1-0. Freshman
Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) collected an assist on the goal, her second of the year.
Both teams managed a shot in the opening five minutes of the match before freshman
Abbey McComb (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) fired a scoring opportunity on goal that was saved by the Clarion goalkeeper at the 12:23-mark. The Vulcans would tally two more shots over the next 10 minutes before both teams would trade possession. Cal U registered four more shots in the closing minutes of the first half, including a pair of chances from Galbreath, that were saved by the goalie. The Vulcans held a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half, while the game remained scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, sophomore goalkeeper
Carly Gobbie (Glassport, Pa./South Allegheny) grabbed an early save before junior
Gianna Sinatra (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) entered the game in goal at the 60:13-mark. McComb peppered a shot on goal from just outside the box in the 63rd minute, but it was ultimately saved by the goalkeeper. The Vulcans defense kept the game scoreless at the 66:12-mark with a 'team save' right next to goal post before Sinatra secured the ball off the rebound. Each team recorded one shot on goal in the final 15 minutes of regulation before the game was sent into overtime.
Clarion notched the only shot in the first overtime period in the 95th minute, which went wide left of the goal. Cal U managed a corner kick in the final two minutes, but was able to get a shot at the net.
Sinatra collected the victory and tallied one save in 45-plus minutes of action after entering the game off the bench. Gobbie recorded her thrid-straight start between the posts this season and registered one save in 60:13 minutes played.
Cal U out-shot Clarion by a 13-6 margin, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal, while the Golden Eagles posted a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
