Vulcans fall versus Mercyhurst, 6-1

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 5) – Facing one of the top programs in the Atlantic Region, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team dropped a 6-1 match to Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Friday afternoon at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 4-7 this season with a 0-2 record in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Lakers improve to 9-6 overall with a 1-1 mark in league action after posting 23 victories last year.

Mercyhurst earned the point in doubles play despite forfeiting the match at the third position. Freshmen Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) dropped a 6-1 contest at the first slot to Kayla Frost and Sangeeta Roopan in a rematch from the finals of the PSAC Individual Championships this fall. At second doubles, junior Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and senior Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) fell by a 6-2 count to Athina Tsagkaraki and Naomi Jahr.

The Lakers secured the match victory after winning all five completed singles matches, forfeiting the contest at the sixth position. Weisen suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss at the first slot to Frost and Ganahl dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to regionally-ranked Roopan at second singles. Gallagher fell by a 6-2, 6-1 count at the third position to Tsagkaraki, while Wohar was dealt a 6-0, 6-1 loss by Jahr at the fourth slot. Senior Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Hannah Wenzel at fifth singles. Junior McKenzie Wilson (Traralgon, Australia/St. Paul's Anglican) was awarded the victory at the sixth position by forfeit.

The Vulcans will play their fifth match in nine days tomorrow, Saturday, April 6, when they travel to face Clarion at 11 a.m.
