Cal U drops league opener at Edinboro, 4-3

EDINBORO, Pa. (April 2) – The Vulcans opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Tuesday afternoon by suffering a 4-3 loss at Edinboro, marking their third match in five days.
 
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team drops to 4-6 overall with a 0-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 1-14 this season behind a 1-0 record in conference play.
 
The Vulcans secured the point during the doubles session after winning at the first position and claiming the victory at the third slot by forfeit. The regionally-ranked duo of freshmen Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) tallied a 6-1 victory at first doubles over Tatiana Batalla Trabal and Jelena Vucenovic. At the second position, senior Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) and junior Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) dropped a 6-0 match against Laura Lopez and Hannah Brentar on Tuesday.
 
The Fighting Scots earned the match victory by winning four of the six singles matches despite forfeiting at the sixth position. Ganahl suffered 7-5, 6-3 loss at first singles versus Lopez, who is ranked No. 20 in the Atlantic Region and is a former All-PSAC West First-Team selection. At the second slot, Gallagher fell in straight sets by a 6-0, 6-0 margin to Batalla Trabal, while Wohar was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at the third position by Vucenovic. Senior Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) claimed her first collegiate singles victory by a 6-0, 6-1 margin over Paige Morris at the fourth slot and junior McKenzie Wilson (Traralgon, Australia/St. Paul's Anglican) dropped 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 match versus Brentar at fifth singles.
 
The Vulcans return to action on Friday, April 5, when they host Mercyhurst in divisional play at 2 p.m.
