CALIFORNIA (April 17) – Facing the two-time, defending-PSAC Champion on Wednesday afternoon, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss versus IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at Roadman Park.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 5-8 this season with a 1-3 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks improve to 9-10 overall behind a 4-1 record in league action. Cal U and IUP have combined to claim the last 12 PSAC Championships with the teams meeting in the league finals six-straight times from 2011-16.
IUP earned the point in the doubles session despite forfeiting the match at the third position. The freshmen duo of
Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and
Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) dropped a 6-3 contest at the first slot to Katya Minchenkova and Thais Andreotti. In the second position, junior
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and senior
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) fell by a 6-0 margin against Julia Newman and Maria Magraner.
The Crimson Hawks secured the match victory after winning all four completed singles matches, forfeiting the contests at the fifth and sixth slots. Weisen was dealt a 6-3, 6-3 loss at the first position to Minchenkova, who received All-PSAC West Second-Team honors in singles last season. In the second slot, Ganahl dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision against regionally-ranked Newman, while Gallagher suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Andreotti at third singles. Wohar fell by a 6-0, 6-3 margin to Magraner in the fourth position. Senior
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) and freshman
Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) were awarded the victories at the fifth and sixth slot, respectively, by forfeit.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, April 24, when they travel to face Slippery Rock at 4 p.m.
