NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium on Saturday when it hosts Seton Hill for Senior Day. The Vulcans suffered a 31-28 last-second loss at then-No. 10 Slippery Rock last weekend. Meanwhile, the Griffins allowed over 500 yards of offense in a 50-23 loss at then-No. 19 IUP.
• Cal U tied the score with a 21-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter before Slippery Rock answered with a field goal as time expired to earn a 31-28 victory last Saturday. Senior
Nelson Brown set season highs with 137 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 32 attempts. The Vulcans limited Slippery Rock to a season low in points after averaging nearly 50 points per game. Redshirt freshman
Noah Dillow led the team with nine tackles, while senior
Lamont McPhatter II finished with six stops and two pass break-ups.
• The Vulcans have won each of the seven all-time meetings against the Griffins. Cal U has won the last two games in the series at Adamson Stadium by a combined seven points.
• An alumnus of the program,
Daniel Day has posted a 2-6 mark after being appointed head coach last December. He helped the Griffins post a 10-win season and advance to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs as a senior. Day served as head coach at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) for two years before spending the following season as the offensive coordinator at Benedictine (Ill.).
• Seton Hill snapped an eight-game losing streak last month with its first back-to-back wins since September 2016. Senior quarterback
Ryan Barabe has totaled nearly 1,400 passing yards and 10 touchdowns over the last five weeks. He set a season high with 366 passing yards last week against IUP and has thrown three touchdowns twice this year. Senior
Kinan Humphrey leads the team this season with 615 receiving yards and 49 catches, plus posted three touchdown receptions last week versus IUP. Classmate
Michael Elardo has posted 410 receiving yards this season and has made at least five catches in each of the last four weeks. Seton Hill ranks next-to-last in the PSAC in rushing offense, averaging just 67.0 yards per game. Junior
Michael Valentino has totaled 224 rushing yards and has posted double-digit carries in each of the last five weeks. The Griffins are allowing over 35 points and nearly 400 yards of total offense per game this season. Junior linebacker
Jayden Emberton-Gaines leads the team and is tied for third in the league with 81 tackles (45 solo). Senior defensive back
Fardan Allen is tied for the conference lead with four interceptions and has made 67 stops, while sophomore linebacker
Jaylen McDuffie ranks fourth in the league with 10.5 TFL and has posted 56 tackles. On special teams, sophomore
Hunter Miller has converted 9-of-14 field goals this season. Classmate
Darnell Carey is one of three players in the league to record a kickoff return for touchdown this season.
• The latest Super Region One rankings were released on Monday and the PSAC continues to feature five teams in the rankings. The region consists of the PSAC, MEC, NE-10 and G-MAC. Shepherd jumped two spots in the latest rankings following a 40-point home win and Urbana moved up one position. There continues to be three undefeated teams within the region with two weeks left in the regular season.
• Cal U and Seton Hill both feature an alumnus as head coach and are two of the five PSAC schools that are currently led by former players. Cal U head coach
Gary Dunn was a four-year starter on the offensive line for the Vulcans from 1991-94. Seton Hill head coach
Daniel Day was a member of the first-ever football team for the Griffins in 2005 and started at center in the initial meeting between the two schools.
• Cal U yielded 213 rushing yards on 39 attempts last week at Slippery Rock after allowing a combined 309 yards through eight games. The Vulcans have led the country for a majority of the season in rushing defense, but now sit third in NCAA Division II at 58.0 rushing yards per game. Cal U remains tied with Minnesota State for the national lead with only two rushing touchdowns allowed this year.
• The Vulcans will recognize a group of 12 seniors this weekend. The senior class has compiled a record of 33-11 and has started a combined 172 games. Defensive back
Aaron Brown is the active leader on defense with 28 career starts, while four other seniors have each made at least 20 starts in their careers.
• Senior running back
Nelson Brown surpassed 4,000 career rushing yards last week at Slippery Rock. He is only the fifth active player in NCAA Division II to reach the personal milestone. Brown set season highs with 137 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns against The Rock. The Maryland native currently leads the PSAC this fall with 862 rushing yards and is within reach of a third-consecutive 1,000-yard season.
• The Vulcans recorded their third blocked kick of the season last week at Slippery Rock. Sophomore
Derek Lockhart blocked a 26-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, as The Rock maintained a 27-21 lead with 10:17 left to play. Cal U, which has blocked all three of its kicks over the last five weeks, has blocked a staggering 55 kicks over the last eight years.
• Junior offensive linemen
Brenden Badstibner and
Eric Hudanick are the team's active career leaders with 32 and 30 starts, respectively. Badstibner has started every game at left guard since the start of the 2017 season, while Hudanick started his career at left tackle before making 20-straight starts at right tackle. Cal U boasts multiple offensive linemen with at least 30 career starts for the first time since late in the 2016 campaign.
• Last week, redshirt freshman linebacker
Noah Dillow led the team with nine tackles at Slippery Rock. He ranks third on the team with 47 stops this season after being limited to just two games in 2018 due to injury. Dillow has recorded at least five tackles in four of the last five weeks, including a career-high 11 stops against Clarion. He has collected the most tackles by a freshman since
Spencer Lynn made 90 stops in 2011.
• Redshirt freshman wide receiver
JaQuae Jackson posted 67 receiving yards and one touchdown on three catches last week. He has made 12 receptions for 180 yards this season behind five catches of at least 20 yards. Jackson was an all-state selection at the scholastic level as an athlete and a defensive back as a senior.
• The Vulcans recovered a pair of fumbles at Slippery Rock last week despite not recording an interception for the first time this year. Cal U is tied with Minnesota State and Tarleton State, both still undefeated, for the lead in NCAA Division II with a plus-14 turnover margin. The Vulcans are also tied for second in the country with 26 turnovers gained, trailing only Bowie State with 29 turnovers gained this season.
• Last week, sophomore wide receiver
Derrick Caraway totaled over 100 all-purpose yards on just four touches at Slippery Rock. He made a pair of receptions for 18 yards, plus added a 46-yard punt return and a 40-yard kickoff return - both of which are the longest this season for the Vulcans. Caraway sits second in the PSAC this season with an average of 14.2 yards per punt return.
• Senior defensive back
Aaron Brown has recorded a turnover in each of the last two weeks with an interception against Mercyhurst and a fumble recovery at Slippery Rock. He leads the PSAC with three fumbles recovered, which is the most for a Cal U player since 2016. Brown has also registered nine tackles over the last two games to match his career high of 30 tackles this season.
