GREENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 3) – The Vulcans scored 35 first-half points on Saturday afternoon before finishing with a 49-34 victory at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania football team improves to 6-4 overall and closes divisional play with a 5-2 mark. The Vulcans finish the year in a tie for second place in the PSAC West standings. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 1-9 this year behind a 1-6 record in league action.
Freshman
Noah Mitchell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) and sophomore
Brian Alsobrooks (Livonia, Mich./Chuchill) combined for 325 passing yards and three touchdowns – all to different receivers. Mitchell finished with 175 passing yards and two scores on 13-of-18 attempts with no interceptions. Alsobrooks posted 150 passing yards on 8-of-15 attempts with one touchdown and one interception.
Redshirt junior
Jordan Dandridge (Duluth, Ga./Duluth) and sophomore
Tyson Hill (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) both eclipsed 100 receiving yards and scored a touchdown in the contest. Hill set a career high with 125 receiving yards on just five catches and Dandridge totaled 104 yards on six receptions. Junior
Chad Livingston (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Laurel Highlands) added 89 receiving yards and one touchdown on a team-leading seven receptions.
The Griffins started quick by scoring on a 71-yard wide receiver pass on the initial offensive play of the contest. Cal U answered on its opening possession on Saturday with junior
Nelson Brown (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) posting a two-yard touchdown run with 9:56 left in the first quarter.
Brown finished the game with 64 rushing yards and three touchdowns (2, 2, 2) on 22 attempts. He now leads the PSAC this season with 18 rushing touchdowns, which are the most by a Cal U player since
Brandon Lombardy totaled 19 scores in 2006. Brown has posted a career-high three rushing touchdowns in a game four times this year.
The Vulcans claimed the lead on their second drive of the game when Mitchell connected with Livingston for a four-yard touchdown at the 6:16-mark of the quarter. Cal U later stretched the lead to 21-7 with 2:22 left in the first quarter when Mitchell found Hill for a 24-yard touchdown on third-and-10.
Seton Hill cut the deficit to 21-15 on the opening play of the second quarter (two-point conversion successful). The Vulcans responded with another two-yard touchdown run by Brown on third-and-goal with 10:16 left before halftime, 28-15. The Griffins cut the deficit to six points on a seven-yard touchdown pass with just 1:21 remaining in the second quarter. Cal U started the ensuing drive at midfield following a short kickoff and a penalty. Following an 11-yard run by Brown, Alsobrooks connected with Dandridge for a 37-yard touchdown pass with only 36 seconds left before the break.
The teams traded field position for the majority of the third quarter with the Vulcans sustaining the only lengthy drive of the quarter. Midway through the quarter, Cal U advanced inside the Seton Hill 10-yard line following a pair of lengthy passes from Alsobrooks to Hill and Livingston. However, the drive ended with a missed 26-yard field goal.
In the fourth quarter, the Griffins cut the deficit to 35-28 on a one-yard touchdown run with 7:46 remaining (PAT blocked). Seton Hill picked up a pair of third downs, plus a fourth-and-three from inside the red zone, during the drive. Cal U countered with a three-play touchdown drive that featured a 36-yard run by redshirt freshman wide receiver
Derrick Caraway (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), a 36-yard completion from Alsobrooks to Dandridge and a two-yard touchdown run by Brown with 6:34 left in the quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Seton Hill was a facing a 3rd-and-15 before junior linebacker
London Cloud (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) recorded a sack and forced the Griffins back to their own 25-yard line. The Vulcans added to the lead on the next play, as an errant snap went over the head of the punter and was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by freshman
Derek Lockhart (Liberty, Pa./South Allegheny) with 5:32 remaining. The Griffins added the final touchdown of the game just over a minute later following a lengthy kick return and pass.
Freshman defensive lineman
Gerald Brown (Duquesne, Pa./West Mifflin) led the team with a season-high 11 tackles (eight solo). Cloud finished with 10 stops (seven solo), 1.0 sack one blocked kick, while redshirt freshman defensive back
Darrell Jackson (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) posted six tackles (four solo) and two pass break-ups.
Cal U closes out the season on Saturday, Nov. 10, when it hosts Bloomsburg for Senior Day at Adamson Stadium with kickoff at 1 p.m.
