Women's Basketball cruises past Haven, 79-56

Vulcans shoot 15-of-15 from free-throw line, score 27 points off turnovers against Bald Eagles

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 23) – The No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team featured five players scoring in double-digits in a 79-56 victory against Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 6-0 overall and open league play with a 1-0 mark. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 2-3 this season and sit 0-1 in conference action.

Senior Monica Burns (New Stanton, Pa./Hempfield) led the team with 13 points behind six-of-six from the free-throw line. She also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and added two steals in the victory. Burns has led the team in scoring four times this season and is averaging a team-best 18.8 points per game.

Junior Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) finished with 10 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals on Saturday. Freshman Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) paced the team with six assists and scored 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and collected 10 points and three steals in the victory, while classmate Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished with 11 points on five-of-eight shooting and four rebounds.

Cal U opened the game on a 9-2 run, including seven points by Allen, before Lock Haven scored consecutive baskets to cut the deficit to 9-6 at the 5:00-mark. The Vulcans responded with an 8-3 rally capped by a three-pointer from Burns to take a 17-9 lead with 2:14 left in the first quarter. Lock Haven made a three-pointer on the next possession before Cal U scored the last nine points of the quarter to take a 26-12 lead. Early in the second quarter, the Bald Eagles scored six-straight points before a three-pointer by Jasper at the 6:21-mark gave the Vulcans a 33-19 lead. Cal U limited Lock Haven to only three free-throws over the final 4:44 of the quarter to take a 40-25 lead into halftime.

The Vulcans started the third quarter on a 9-4 rally to stretch their lead to 20 points, 49-29, following a three-pointer by Hudson at the 4:49-mark. Lock Haven scored the final five points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 57-42. Cal U countered in the opening two-plus minutes of the fourth quarter with seven-unanswered points to claim a 64-42 lead following a three-pointer by Harrison with 7:36 left to play. The Bald Eagles then worked the deficit down to 16 points at 64-48 following back-to-back, traditional three-point plays. The Vulcans led by as many as 24 points multiple times in the final minutes of the contest.

Cal U finished the game shooting 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field and went a perfect 15-for-15 on free-throw attempts. Meanwhile, Lock Haven shot at a 41.5 clip (22-of-53) from the floor and went just one-of-nine (11.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Vulcans held a 39-36 rebounding advantage while the Bald Eagles scored 36 points inside the paint. Cal U forced 22 turnovers in the victory and scored 27 points off turnovers.

Junior Ahnera Parker scored a team-high 14 points while playing 19 minutes off the bench. Junior Bink Redman finished with 10 points and six assists, while senior Jordyn Kloster added seven points and six rebounds.

The Vulcans continue league crossover play tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 24, when they host Mansfield at 1 p.m.
