CALIFORNIA (Nov. 24) – The No. 13 Vulcans forced a season-high 36 turnovers on Sunday afternoon while rolling to a 70-42 win against Mansfield at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 7-0 this season with a 2-0 record in league action. The Vulcans have opened the campaign with seven-consecutive wins for the third time in the last six years. Meanwhile, Mansfield falls to 2-4 overall while starting conference play with a 0-2 mark.
Freshman
Olivia Hudson (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) led the team in scoring with 11 points while playing 20 minutes off the bench. She also registered three rebounds, two blocks and four steals in the win on Sunday. Hudson has scored in double-digits five times this season and is averaging 10.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Sophomores
Lauren Bennett (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) and
Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) both finished with 10 points against the Mountaineers. Bennett shot four-of-six from the floor with a pair of three-pointers, plus added four rebounds and two steals, in 21 minutes off the bench. Junior
Bianca Jasper (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) tallied six points, four rebounds, five assists and seven steals while playing 24 minutes on Sunday. Sophomore
Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished with seven points, three rebounds and two steals in the victory.
Cal U opened the game on a 12-2 run with Allen and senior
Monica Burns (New Stanton, Pa./Hempfield) combining for 10 points. Following a three-pointer by the Mountaineers, the Vulcans responded with an 11-3 rally and forced six turnovers over four-plus minutes to take a 23-8 lead with 1:21 left in the first quarter. Cal U scored the final basket of the quarter to spark a run of nine-straight points that stretched the lead to 32-10 with 6:21 remaining before halftime. The teams traded points for the remainder of the second quarter with the Vulcans taking a 42-21 lead into the break.
The Vulcans scored the initial basket of the third quarter before the Mountaineers rallied off eight-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 44-29 at the 6:28-mark. Cal U then held Mansfield scoreless for over six minutes while scoring 14-straight points to extend the lead to 58-29 on consecutive layups by Hudson with 28 seconds left in the third quarter. The Mountaineers eventually worked the deficit down to 25 points before the Vulcans scored six-straight points to stretch the lead to as many as 31 points, 70-39, with 1:33 remaining in the game.
Cal U finished the game shooting 37.1 percent (26-of-70) from the field despite going 6-of-25 (24.0 percent) from three-point territory. Meanwhile, Mansfield shot at 36.7 clip (18-of-49) and attempted just three free-throws in the contest. The Vulcans were out-rebounded by a 44-34 margin, but totaled 32 points in the paint. Cal U totaled 24 steals in the victory and scored 36 points off turnovers.
Freshman Jasmine Hilton led the Mountaineers with 10 points and added seven rebounds and two steals in the loss. Junior Kira Merritt finished with nine points, three rebounds and four assists, while freshman Jasmine Perez paced the team with 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Vulcans are idle for nearly two weeks before returning to action on Dec. 7 at Shippensburg in PSAC Crossover play at 1 p.m.
