Noah Mitchell finished with 237 passing yards and three touchdowns, including a pair to sophomore wide receiver
Derrick Caraway. Sophomore defensive lineman
Gerald Brown led the team with six tackles, including 3.0 TFL and 1.0 sack. The Vulcans yielded just 231 yards of total offense in the win and forced the Griffins to minus-13 rushing yards. Senior defensive back
Lamont McPhatter II added five stops and 1.0 TFL in the victory.
Â
• The Vulcans and Golden Rams are meeting for the first time since the 2013 campaign. The programs previously met six times in seven years, including twice in the 2008 season when Cal U posted a 47-36 win over West Chester in the PSAC Championship.
Â
• The winningest active coach in the league,
Bill Zwaan has posted a 143-61 record over 17 seasons as head coach of the Golden Rams. He has guided the program to nine appearance in the NCAA Playoffs with national semifinal appearances in both 2004 and 2013. Last year, West Chester won the PSAC Championship while making its third appearance in the State Game in four years.
Â
• West Chester opened the year with six-straight wins before losing to Shepherd and Kutztown in a span of three weeks. The Golden Rams feature a dual threat at quarterback in senior
Paul Dooley, who passed for four touchdowns last week. He has totaled over 1,700 passing yards this season while also accounting for nearly 400 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Redshirt freshman
Ja'Den McKenzie ranks fifth in the PSAC with 803 rushing yards and has scored multiple touchdowns four times this season. Senior wide receiver
Lex Rosario and junior tight end
Dan Neuhaus are tied for the team lead with 474 receiving yards and have combined for nine touchdowns. Rosario has made at least four receptions in all but one game this season, while Neuhaus is averaging 19.0 yards per catch as a tight end. The Golden Rams boast one of the top defenses in the league this year, ranking among the top three in passing defense, scoring defense and red zone defense. Senior defensive back
Jarey Elder, who paced the PSAC in interceptions last season, is tied for the team lead with 51 tackles and has registered three interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles. Senior defensive lineman
Ch'aim Smith ranks second in the league this season with both 17.0 TFL and 7.5 sacks. West Chester also features one of the premier punters in the country, as junior
George Lambritsios leads the PSAC and sits third in NCAA Division II with 44.6 yards per punt while placing 16 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Â
• The latest Super Region One rankings were released on Monday and the PSAC continues to feature five teams in the rankings. The region consists of the PSAC, MEC, NE-10 and G-MAC. There are now two remaining unbeaten teams after Notre Dame (Ohio) was dealt its first loss of the year last week. Five of the regionally-ranked teams will close the regular season on the road, including three of the top four.
Â
• In the last week of the regular season, the PSAC will host its annual championship with Slippery Rock facing Kutztown in a meeting of undefeated teams. Notre Dame of the MEC and Tiffin of the G-MAC enter the final week with at least a share of their respective titles and can claim outright championships on Saturday. Meanwhile, the NE-10 enters the weekend with four teams tied for first place.
Â
• Cal U secured its 15th-consecutive season with at least seven victories last week with its win over Seton Hill. It marks the longest active streak among all PSAC members. During that span, the Vulcans have posted a 137-40 overall record for a .774 winning percentage and made seven appearances in the NCAA Playoffs.
Â
• The Vulcans and Golden Rams enter the weekend with four common opponents in Gannon, Kutztown Seton Hill and Shippensburg by virtue of league crossover play. Both teams have posted a 3-1 record against the quartet this year with both teams losing at home against Kutztown. Cal U holds a 37-12 record against PSAC East opponents since the 2004 campaign.
Â
• Senior running back
Nelson Brown enters the weekend ranked second in the league with 949 rushing yards this season. He is within reach of becoming the first player to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in consecutive years since
Lamont Smith in 2010-11. Brown sits fifth all-time in school history with 35 rushing touchdowns in just two seasons and ranks fourth among active players in NCAA Division II with 48 career rushing touchdowns.
Â
• Sophomore
Derek Lockhart registered a fumble recovery and a blocked kick last week against Seton Hill. He recovered a loose ball on an errant pass behind the line of scrimmage in the first quarter before posting a blocked punt late in the third quarter. Lockhart has played offense, defense and special teams this year and has totaled 16 tackles, two blocked kicks, 249 kickoff return yards and three receptions.
Â
• Cal U features a trio of wide receivers in senior
Jordan Dandridge, junior
Tyson Hill and sophomore
Derrick Caraway that have each made at least six touchdown receptions this season. Caraway leads the team with eight scores on just 26 catches. This marks only the second time in recent program history in which the Vulcans have three players with at least six receiving touchdowns in a season (2016).
Â
• Last week, the Vulcans forced Seton Hill into minus-13 rushing yards on 17 attempts. Cal U has yielded negative rushing yards three times season while allowing only three rushing touchdowns on 270 carries. The Vulcans again now lead NCAA Division II in rushing defense at 50.9 yards per game and are tied with Minnesota State for the fewest rushing touchdowns allowed this season.
Â
• Sophomore quarterback
Noah Mitchell eclipsed 5,000 career passing yards against Seton Hill last week. He finished with 237 passing yards and three touchdowns versus the Griffins, as he has thrown at least three touchdowns five times this year. Each of the last six quarterbacks at Cal U to start multiple years has eclipsed the 5,000-yard milestone with
Sam Mannery holding the all-time school record at 8,860 passing yards.
Â
• Last week, sophomore defensive lineman
Gerald Brown tied his career high with 3.0 TFL against Seton Hill. He also led the team with six tackles and registered 1.0 sack in the victory. Brown ranks third in the league with 14.0 TFL this season and also sits third with 7.0 sacks. The West Mifflin product enters the weekend as the team's leader with 57 tackles after tallying at least five stops in each of the last six games.
Â
• Junior offensive lineman
Eric Hudanick was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team this week. He has started every game at right tackle over the last two seasons and ranks second on the team with 31 career starts. Hudanick is pursuing a degree in business administration (economics) with a minor in finance.
Â

The Vulcans also are tied for second in NCAA Division II with a plus-16 turnover margin behind 28 takeaways. Bowie State leads the nation with 32 takeaways and 24 interceptions, while Colorado State-Pueblo boasts a national-best plus-17 turnover margin.
