Vulcans drop match at Frostburg State, 5-2

Winseck, Gallagher both earn wins in singles, doubles play versus Bobcats

FROSTBURG, Md. (Oct. 8) – Despite wins at first and second singles, the Vulcans suffered a 5-2 loss at Frostburg State on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
 
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team drops to 0-2 this season. Meanwhile, the Bobcats claim their first win of the season in dual matches and improve to 1-3 overall after posting a 5-9 record the previous year while competing at the NCAA Division III level.
 
Frostburg State opened play by securing the doubles point on Wednesday after winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. At the first position, senior Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and sophomore Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) posted a 6-0 victory against Rabiatu Ladan and Shea Przywieczerski. Sophomores Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Julia McDaniel (South Park, Pa./South Park) suffered a 6-1 loss in second doubles to Allison Paul and Sarah Cartwright. At the third slot, junior Alexa Uhlyar (Finleyville, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Annie Miller (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) fell by a 6-0 margin against Cherise Jenkins and Madison Toothman.
 
The Bobcats completed the match victory by winning four of the six singles matches to earn the dual win. Winseck made her college debut at the first position and claimed a straight-set win by a score of 6-1, 6-1 versus Erika Femne. In second singles, Gallagher earned 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 victory over Cartwright and McDaniel battled in a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 12-10 loss in the third slot. Camargo was downed by 6-4, 6-3 margin against Ladan in the fourth position, while Uhlyar suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss in straight sets at fifth singles to Ariana Zuzunaga. In the sixth slot, Miller dropped a 6-0, 6-0 contest versus Toothman on Wednesday.  
 
The Vulcans return to dual play this weekend when they travel to play a pair of league crossover matches, beginning at West Chester on Friday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m.
