NOTES
• Cal U makes a road trip to PSAC West-leading Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. The Vulcans scored 20-unanswered points in a 27-15 victory last week over Mercyhurst. Meanwhile, The Rock remains undefeated this year following a 41-6 win against Clarion.
• Senior
Nelson Brown finished with nearly 200 all-purpose yards and scored a pair of second-half touchdowns, as the Vulcans claimed a 27-15 win over Mercyhurst. Brown posted a season-high 119 rushing yards and one touchdown on 24 carries, plus made a 74-yard touchdown reception. Cal U recorded three interceptions and allowed 255 yards of total offense while holding Mercyhurst scoreless in the first half. Senior
Lamont McPhatter II led the team with seven tackles and sophomore
Jermal Martin, Jr. posted six stops, one interception and a blocked kick.
• The Rock has won six of the last eight meetings in the series after the Vulcans won five-straight games from 2006-10. Additionally, Cal U has lost the last four meetings at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, as its last road win was in 2010.
• After spending two decades as an assistant with the program,
Shawn Lutz has posted a 34-10 record in four seasons as head coach of The Rock. He was selected the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading the program to its fifth appearance in the PSAC Championship in the last eight years before advancing to quarterfinals of the NCAA Playoffs.
• Slippery Rock boasts one of the most explosive offenses in the country this year, as it ranks among the top 15 in scoring offense, passing offense and total offense. Senior quarterback
Roland Rivers III leads NCAA Division II with 28 passing touchdowns and sits fourth with 2,533 passing yards, plus has rushed for six touchdowns. He has recorded six 300-yard games this year and has thrown at least three touchdowns six times. The Rock boasts a dynamic trio of junior wide receivers in
Henry Litwin,
Jermaine Wynn, Jr. and
Cinque Sweeting that have accounted for 26 touchdowns. Wynn leads the PSAC with 827 receiving yards on 50 catches, while Litwin sits second in the league with 53 catches and 10 touchdown receptions. Senior
Charles Snorweah, a transfer from Rutgers, and Rivers both nearly have 400 rushing yards and are tied for the team lead with six rushing touchdowns. The Rock also features one of the top defenses in the league this season. Senior linebacker
Brad Zaffram, an All-PSAC West First-Team selection in 2018, leads the team with 47 tackles and ranks second in the league with 15.0 TFL. Junior defensive lineman
Chad Kuhn paces the PSAC with 8.5 sacks and ranks third in the league with 11.5 TFL. Slippery Rock boasts one of the most prolific kickers in conference history in senior
Jake Chapla. A four-time All-PSAC West honoree, he is the school's all-time leader in points scored with 349 behind 47 field goals and 208 PAT attempts.
• The initial Super Region One rankings were released on Monday and the PSAC features five teams in the rankings. The region consists of the PSAC, MEC, NE-10 and the G-MAC. There is only one game this weekend between regionally-ranked teams, but Notre Dame travels to one-loss Frostburg State. The regional playoffs feature seven teams and only the top seed in the final regional rankings will receive a first-round bye.
• Kutztown and Slippery Rock enter the weekend as the only undefeated teams in their respective divisions. However, the Golden Bears travel to regionally-ranked West Chester and a loss could force a three-way tie with Kutztown, Shepherd and West Chester for first place in the PSAC East. Meanwhile, a win by the Vulcans could also force a three-way tie in the PSAC West with IUP and Slippery Rock.
• Cal U will be facing its second nationally-ranked opponent on the road this season. The Vulcans have posted a 5-6 record against top-25 teams under fourth-year head coach
Gary Dunn. Cal U is looking to snap a 10-game road losing streak against top-25 teams, as its last road victory over a nationally-ranked program was the 2010 season-opener at then-No. 11 Saginaw Valley.
• Slippery Rock is the most penalized team in NCAA Division II this season at 12.13 penalties per game. The Rock ranks next-to-last among the 166 teams in NCAA Division II with 112.50 penalty yards per game. Slippery Rock was penalized a whopping 22 times in Week 2 and has been flagged double-digit times in five games.
• Sophomore transfer quarterback
Josh Dale directed three second-half scoring drives last week after entering midway through the third quarter. He passed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on five-of-seven attempts against Mercyhurst. Dale played in 10 games last season at UNC Pembroke and started the season-opener before finishing the year with 526 passing yards and four touchdowns.
• Cal U continues to lead NCAA Division II in rushing defense this year, allowing just 38.6 yards per game. The Vulcans yielded a season-high 94 rushing yards on 34 carries last week against Mercyhurst. Cal U has surrendered a total of 309 rushing yards and just two touchdowns over eight games this year. Slippery Rock enters the weekend ranked third in the PSAC in rushing offense with over 170 yards per game.
• Last week, senior running back
Nelson Brown set a season high with 119 rushing yards and scored a pair of second-half touchdowns. He posted 81 rushing yards in the second half behind a 31-yard score late in the fourth quarter. Brown also set a career long with a 74-yard touchdown reception last week. The Maryland native is tied for third among active players in NCAA Division II with 48 total touchdowns (44 rushing).
• Cal U leads the PSAC and is tied for second in the nation this year with 16 interceptions by nine different players. The Vulcans have made at least one interception in all eight games this season, which is the longest streak of games since a nine-game stretch that spanned the 2009-10 campaigns. Cal U has recorded at least 20 interceptions four times in the last 15 seasons (2005-06, 2010-11).
• Junior wide receiver
Tyson Hill reached the century mark for the fifth time this season against Mercyhurst, finishing with 102 receiving yards on six catches behind a 56-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. He sits second in the PSAC and No. 13 in the country this year with 779 receiving yards. Hill is tied for the team lead with 44 receptions with a team-best 16 catches going for at least 20 yards.
• Sophomore defensive back
Jermal Martin, Jr. enters the weekend tied for league lead with both four interceptions and two blocked kicks. He blocked a 32-yard field goal by Mercyhurst early in the second quarter, as the Lakers were held scoreless in the first half. Martin later made an interception midway through the fourth quarter that was converted into the game-sealing touchdown.
• Cal U is tied with Augustana (S.D.) for the lead in NCAA Division II with a plus-13 turnover margin. Both schools have forced 24 turnovers this season with the Vikings benefiting from 11 fumble recoveries and the Vulcans recording 16 interceptions. Incarnate Word (Texas) of FCS and Washington & Jefferson of NCAA Division III are the only schools across
all NCAA divisions to have forced more than 24 turnovers this season.
• Senior transfer defensive lineman
Jordan Scarbrough has tallied 10 stops and 4.5 TFL over the last three weeks as a reserve. Against Mercyhurst, he became the first defensive lineman since 2015 to record an interception. Scarbrough posted a 25-yard interception for a touchdown while playing at Stony Brook (N.Y.) last season.
