Vulcans dealt loss at Pitt-Johnstown, 95-72

MacAdams posts third double-double of the season; UPJ featured three freshmen in double-figures

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Jan. 16) – Freshman Collin MacAdams (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) posted a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team suffered a 95-72 loss at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday night.
 
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 6-9 overall with a 4-5 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats remain undefeated at home and improve to 11-5 this season behind a 6-3 mark in conference action.
 
MacAdams collected his third double-double of the season after scoring 20 points on 6-of-10 attempts and made six-of-eight from the free-throw line. He also collected a career-high 17 rebounds (six offensive), four assists and three blocks in 40 minutes of action. MacAdams has now recorded back-to-back 20-point games and ranks second on the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game.
 
Sophomore Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) finished with 16 points and five assists while playing 34 minutes. Freshman Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) totaled 14 points and three rebounds in 38 minutes of play. Sophomore Ike Okwara (Lahnam, Md./Friendship Collegiate Academy) tallied nine points on four-of-six shooting and three rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench, while redshirt junior Donte' Williams (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) registered eight points, four rebounds and two blocks while playing 33 minutes.
 
The Mountain Cats opened the contest on a 12-0 run after making six-of-eight attempts, while the Vulcans missed their initial seven shots of the game. Cal U scored six of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 14-6 with 13:43 left in the first half. Both teams exchanged the next six buckets before Pitt-Johnstown tallied seven-straight point to stretch the lead to 25-11 midway through the first half. Pegram halted the run with a layup in transition before the teams exchanged points over the next five-plus minutes, as the Mountain Cats continued to hold a 34-20 advantage. The Vulcans would make five-of-six shots, including three from beyond the arc, to close the gap to 43-30 heading into halftime.
 
Pitt-Johnstown went on a 13-4 rally over the initial five minutes of the second half after making five-of-eight from the field. During that stretch, Cal U made just two shots before a three-pointer from junior Jordan Gessner (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin) snapped the run. The Mountain Cats held a 58-37 lead with 14:53 left in the contest before the Vulcans notched four-straight points to cut the deficit to 58-41. Pitt-Johnstown continued to stretch the advantage with an 11-5 run before both teams traded the next eight baskets with 6:26 remaining. Cal U knocked down six-of-nine from the floor over the final four-plus minutes of the game, led by MacAdams with six points.
 
The Vulcans shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) from the field while converting just 9-of-31 (29.0 percent) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats finished the game with a .544 field-goal percentage (37-of-68) and made 13-of-15 (86.7 percent) from the free-throw line. Pitt-Johnstown held a commanding 44-31 rebounding advantage, while tallying 29 assists and 44 points in the paint.

Freshman Jared Jakubick led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc and added four assists in 28 minutes off the bench. Classmate Caiden Landis finished with 21 points, five rebounds and nine assists in 28 minutes, while teammate John Paul Kromka posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while playing 21 minutes. Sophomore Marcin Wiszomirski tallied 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes of the bench.
 
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they host Seton Hill in PSAC West play at the Convocation Center, starting at 3 p.m.
