Moehring records eighth kill/dig double-double, van Schaik matches career high with four aces

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 29) – Behind a kill/dig double-double from freshman Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County), the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team collected a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-18, 25-15) over Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
 
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 12-6 this season behind a 5-1 record in league play, while also recording their fourth-consecutive victory at home. Meanwhile, The Rock drops to 4-10 overall with a 1-5 mark in conference action.
 
Moehring paced the team with 14 kills on a .314 hitting percentage and added 11 digs to register her eighth kill/dig double-double of the year. Senior Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) totaled 13 kills and matched a career high with four service aces. Senior Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) notched seven kills, while freshman Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense with 33 assists versus Slippery Rock.
 
Sophomore Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) recorded double-digit digs for the third-straight match with 19 digs and Moehring ranked second on the team in digs. Freshman Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) also posted 10 digs in the victory. Senior Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and van Schaik controlled the net with two blocks each.
 
In the first set, Cal U built a 5-2 advantage before both teams split the next eight points to keep the Vulcans ahead, 9-6. Cal U held the lead midway through the set until Slippery Rock closed the gap to tie the score at 16-16 following four-straight points. After both sides tied four more times late in the first set, the Vulcans managed to take the advantage 24-23 on a kill from van Schaik. Following a Slippery Rock timeout, Cal U claimed the first set 25-23 on a kill by Moehring.
 
The Vulcans registered 13 kills on .344 clip to take the second set by a 25-18 count. The Rock opened up an early 7-3 lead forcing a timeout from Cal U. The Vulcans rallied back with six of the next eight points to tie the score at 9-9. Both team battled for the lead before three-consecutive points by Cal U gave them a 16-13 advantage. The Vulcans tallied a 7-3 run to take a commanding 23-16, while also forcing The Rock to use both of their timeouts. After trading the next two points, Cal U sealed the second set on a kill from van Schaik, 25-18.
 
Cal U completed the sweep with a 25-15 victory with a game-high 16 kills in the third set. Slippery Rock tied the match at 4-4 before the Vulcans recorded seven-straight points, including four service aces from van Schaik, to take an 11-4 lead. The Rock snapped the run on a service error before Cal U tallied six of the next eight points to take a comfortable 17-6 advantage. The Vulcans continued to build their lead with four-consecutive points, including three kills from van Schaik, to take a 21-8 lead. Slippery Rock battled back with a 7-3 run before Moehring secured the match victory with a kill, 25-15.
 
Cal U starts a five-match road trip on Tuesday, Oct. 2, when it travels to Seton Hill in nearby Greensburg, Pennsylvania, for a PSAC Southwest divisional match at 7 p.m.
