Vulcans suffer loss at Seton Hill, 3-0

Silbaugh, Priore tally double-digit digs; Cal U, Seton Hill, Clarion tied for division lead

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 2) – The Vulcans started a five-match road trip with a 3-0 loss (25-3, 25-15, 25-21) at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southwest divisional play on Tuesday night.
 
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls to 12-7 overall with a 5-2 mark in league action. The Griffins improve to 11-6 this season behind a 5-2 record in conference play. Prior to the match, Seton Hill mourned the sudden loss of Maggie Murray, who graduated earlier this year after being a four-year member of the volleyball team and was a two-year team captain.  
 
Senior Tina Bellhy (McDonald,Pa./Fort Cherry) totaled six kills on a .455 clip, while classmate Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) and junior Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) also posted six kills at Seton Hill. Freshman Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense with 23 assists in the loss.
 
Sophomore Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) led the defensive effort with 11 digs and Priore recorded 10 digs on Tuesday. Freshman Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) registered seven digs, while Bellhy and van Schaik both controlled the net with three blocks.
 
Seton Hill tallied 13 kills on a  staggering .706 hitting percentage to claim the first set by a 25-3 margin. The Griffins opened the set with a 5-0 run, including three attack errors by the Vulcans to force an early timeout. Seton Hill built the lead to 9-0 before Cal U snapped the run on a kill from Priore. After both teams traded points, the Griffin won back-to-back points, 13-2. Following a second Cal U timeout, Seton Hill won nine-straight points to take a 21-3 advantage. The Vulcans stopped the run until the Griffins scored the next three points to secure the first set, 25-3.
 
In the second set, Seton Hill jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage before Cal U tied the match at 4-4. The Griffins responded to score four-unanswered points before the Vulcans snapped the stretch on a kill from van Schaik. Seton Hill continued to the hold the lead and tallied six-straight points to take a 16-7 advantage. Both teams exchanged points late in the set, as the Griffins stayed ahead 21-11. Cal U scored four of the next six points before Seton Hill took the second set, 25-15.
 
The Griffins sealed the match victory with a 25-21 win in the third set. Both teams traded the opening nine points before Seton Hill tallied four-straight points, 8-5. Following a Cal U timeout, the Vulcans scored six of the next nine points to tie the match, 11-11. Cal U established a 6-2 run before forcing Seton Hill to take a timeout. The Vulcans built a 19-15 advantage before the Griffins scored five-unanswered points to take a 20-19 lead. Seton Hill closed the set on a 5-2 run to complete the match victory, 25-21.  
 
Cal U continues its road trip on Friday, Oct. 5, when it travels to face No. 23 Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, starting at 7 p.m.
