CALIFORNIA (Sept. 28) – The Vulcans posted a season-high .340 hitting percentage on Friday night in a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) against Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 11-6 with a 4-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 8-7 this season behind a 1-4 record in conference play.
Junior
Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) led all players with 13 kills on a .361 clip and posted her third-consecutive kill/dig double-double after adding 11 digs. Freshman
Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) registered 10 kills on a .357 hitting percentage, while classmate
Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) guided the offense with 32 assists and added four kills in the victory.
Sophomore
Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) paced the team with 17 digs and Priore recorded double-digit digs. Freshman
Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) notched an additional seven digs versus the Fighting Scots. The defensive effort at the net was led by senior
Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) with six total blocks and Benson added three blocks on Friday.
The Vulcans posted a .345 clip with 12 kills to secure a 25-16 win in the first set. Cal U established a 7-4 advantage before Edinboro responded to tie the match at 8-8. The Vulcans countered with four-straight points, including three kills from Priore, to take a 12-8 lead. Both teams exchanged points before the Fighting Scots were forced to take a timeout, as Cal U held a 15-10 advantage. The Vulcan remained ahead and tallied three-unanswered points to take a commanding a 23-15 lead. Cal U won two of the three next points to claim the first set, 25-16.
In the second set, Edinboro opened up an 8-5 advantage after totaling four-straight points. The Vulcans closed the gap with a 5-2 run to tie the match at 10-10 before the Fighting Scots regain the lead with five-answered points. The teams traded the next six points before Cal U trimmed the deficit to 18-17 after a pair of kills from Moehring. Following a timeout, the Vulcans established their first lead of the set at 22-19 after a 5-1 run. Cal U took four of the next six points to secure the second set, 25-21.
The Vulcans completed the sweep with a 25-20 victory in the third set on a staggering .455 hitting percentage. Cal U posted an early 6-2 lead before Edinboro cut the deficit with three-straight points, 6-5. The Vulcans continued to hold the advantage before scoring four of the next six points to take a 14-10 lead. Following a timeout, Cal U mounted a 5-3 run to take a 19-13 advantage before the Fighting Scots trimmed the deficit to 23-19. The Vulcans sealed the match victory on back-to-back kills in the third set, 25-20.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 29, when they host Slippery Rock in PSAC Crossover play at the Convocation Center, starting at 1 p.m.
