Vulcans swept at Shippensburg, 3-0

Cal U suffers first conference loss of the year; Priore, Moehring post kill/dig double-doubles

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 22) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team fell by a 3-0 count (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
 
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 10-6 this season behind a 3-1 record in league action. Meanwhile, the Raiders recorded their 13th-straight victory to improve to 14-2 overall with a 4-0 mark in conference play.
 
Junior Rachel Priore (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) posted her fourth kill/dig double-double of the season with a team-leading 12 kills, while adding 11 digs in the loss. Freshman Sarah Moehring (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) also tallied a kill/dig double-double, her seventh of the season, with 11 kills on a .200 hitting percentage and 12 digs. Freshman Sarah Benson (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) directed the offense with 25 assists and added 10 digs to record her fourth assist/dig double-double in the last five matches.
 
Sophomore Jensen Silbaugh (Warren, Ohio/Lakeview) paced the team with 14 digs and freshman Shelby Alloway (Dunkirk, Ohio/Hardin Northern) added 13 digs versus the Raiders. Cal U matched a season-low with two team blocks with senior Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) registering two blocks on Saturday.
 
Shippensburg recorded a staggering .385 hitting percentage with 15 kills to take the first set, 25-18. The Raiders took an early 5-1 advantage before scoring five of the next seven points to take a 10-3 lead. Following the timeout, Cal U rallied back with a 5-2 run to trim the deficit to 12-8. Both teams exchanged points midway through the set before three-straight points gave Shippensburg a 20-14 lead. After trading the next four points, the Raiders used a 3-2 run to seal the first set, 25-18.
 
In the second set, Cal U built an 8-5 lead before Shippensburg tied the match at 8-8 with three-unanswered points. Both teams exchanged the lead until a 9-1 run by the Raiders gave them a 19-12 advantage. The Vulcans cut the deficit to 21-15 before the Raiders scored four of the next five points to secure the second set, 25-16.
 
Shippensburg completed the sweep with a 25-22 victory in the third set. The Raiders opened up an 11-4 lead before the Vulcans trimmed the deficit with three-straight points, 11-7. Shippensburg continued to hold the advantage until Cal U tied the contest at 18-18 on a kill by Bucklin. The Raiders reclaimed the lead at 23-20 with three-unanswered points before the Vulcans scored a pair of points to force a Shippensburg timeout. The Raiders claimed the match victory on an attacking error by the Vulcans, 25-22.
 
Cal U returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28, when it faces Edinboro in PSAC Crossover action at the Convocation Center, starting at 7 p.m.
