CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Sept. 22) – In an Atlantic region contest, the Vulcans suffered a 6-1 loss against West Liberty on Saturday afternoon at Roadman Park in non-conference play.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team drops to 2-2 this season. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers improve to 1-0 overall in their initial dual match of the year after playing in a pair of invitational this fall.
The Hilltoppers swept the doubles session to take a 1-0 lead to open the contest. The freshmen duo of
Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and
Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) fell by a 6-4 margin to Chloe Riley and Laura Huwe. Junior
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and sophomore Gina Greer (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) suffered a 6-2 loss versus Raissa Wagner and Luisa Agudelo. In the third position, senior
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) and freshman
Tanya Madhok (Mumbai, India/Jamnabai Narsee) dropped a 6-3 match against Carleyah McLean and Anita Ponti.
West Liberty clinched the match victory with five straight-set wins in singles play. Weisen posted the lone victory for the Vulcans with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-3 win versus Wagner at the first position. At second singles, Ganahl suffered a 7-6, 6-1 loss against Riley, while Wohar fell by a score of 6-0, 6-0 to Ponti at the third slot. In the fourth position, Madhok dropped a 6-3, 6-2 contest versus Huwe before Gallagher suffered a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Agudelo in fifth singles. In the sixth slot, sophomore
Emilee Leydig (Windber, Pa./Windber) fell by a 6-1, 6-0 margin against McLean.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 26, when they travel to face Salem in non-conference play at 3 p.m.
