Cal U shutout in PSAC opener at ESU, 3-0

Vulcans suffer first loss and shutout of the season; Warriors play with 10-men for final 14 minutes

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 21) – Facing the defending-conference champion, the Vulcans yielded one goal in the first half before suffering a 3-0 shutout loss at East Stroudsburg on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team drops to 1-1-3 overall and opens league play at 0-1 after going nearly a month without a defeat. Meanwhile, the Warriors improve to 4-2 this season with a 1-1-mark in conference action.

East Stroudsburg applied pressure on the offensive half of the field in the opening 10 minutes with a pair of corner kicks and a shot wide of the goal. At the 18:57-mark, the Warriors found the back of the net on a header by sophomore Oliver Lundberg following a cross from senior Brandon Levano to take a 1-0 lead. Neither teams produced many scoring chances in the first half, as the Vulcans were held to just one shot. East Stroudsburg took the lead into the break and had a slight 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

In the second half, the Warriors once again created early chances, but Cal U responded with a pair of shots, including an attempt from freshman Dimitri Tsetezoh (Germantown, Md./Sherwood) that was saved by the goalie. East Stroudsburg found its rhythm just over midway through the second half, scoring its second goal on a shot from sophomore Anton Lysell with assist by junior Erik Cardosco. In the 76th minute, Lundberg received his second yellow card of the contest and the Warriors were forced to play with 10-men the rest of the match. Just 16 seconds after the ejection, East Stroudsburg tallied an insurance goal, which was scored by senior Jordan Ellison to take a 3-0 advantage. The Warriors nearly added to their lead in the closing minutes, but the shot attempt hit the post and the Vulcan defense cleared the ball.

Senior Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) recorded two saves on 11 shots and played all 90 minutes of action.

East Stroudsburg held a 11-4 shot advantage and posted a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to PSAC action on Sunday, Sept. 23, when they host Seton Hill at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, starting at 1 p.m.
